This Hormone Is Just As Important As Estrogen

Estrogen gets such a bad rep because it’s the most talked about hormone when it comes to women’s health.

Estrogen-dominant conditions (fibroids, cysts, PCOS, endometriosis and breast cancer) vilify estrogen and also make it sound like the only reproductive hormone worth paying attention to.

The symptoms of estrogen dominance include:

  • PMS
  • Weight gain
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Fluid retention
  • Depression
  • Anemia
  • Acne
  • Low libido
  • And the list goes on

But there are actually more hormones than just estrogen and testosterone, which are often overlooked.

The one I’m focusing on is progesterone.

It’s not only important for maintaining a pregnancy, but it’s also a “happy” hormone.

It’s responsible for keeping anxiety and depression away, and preventing insomnia, irritability, menstrual cramps, irregular, heavy or short cycles and fibrocystic breasts.

That’s why when you’re taking synthetic hormones from birth control, you can start to feel those exact symptoms.

The hormone equivalent to progesterone found in birth control pills is called “progestin”, which is similar in the chemical structure, but works completely differently from progesterone in the body.

Sometimes the issue isn’t even an excess in estrogen (or estrogen dominance), but rather that progesterone is too low, causing a relative estrogen dominance.

Hence the whole “hormone balance” issue. Hormones play a very intricate dance with each other, and when one of them misses a step (or two), it affects the entire performance.

The signs above are all indications of low progesterone, which actually look like an estrogen dominance issue.

What brings it all to balance?

It’s important to know what the underlying issues are.

It doesn’t just start with “low progesterone”.

Most often, it’s stress which starts it all, which is why I always circle back to: “how are you taking care of yourself?”

What are you doing for yourself?

What lights you up, makes you feel good, creative, energized?

Have you been doing that?

That’s where you need to start.

What else is stuck in your womb space that’s causing this imbalance?

Eating the right foods and nutrients is the easy part. What’s hard is looking in the mirror, and facing the emotions, fears, beliefs that are holding space in your body, not allowing any room for another life to grow.
